Located in a swampy depression, the area is drained from the sixth century BC during the reign of King Tarquinus Priscus. Indeed, the surrounding hills were gradually populated, making it inhospitable area a central location. The first public buildings are built and then the forum will quickly become religious, political and judicial center of the city of Rome. Goes here among other things, the Senate (Curie), the rostra (Rostra), the Temple of Saturn, Castor and Pollux, Concorde and basilicas (commercial and judicial role) ...

The boom period of the Roman Forum is mainly during the Roman Republic, the end of the Punic Wars (second century BC), Julius Caesar decides to build new forums, this one is getting too small for Rome , became the center of a vast empire. The Roman Forum will become a place for the glory of the Emperors with the construction of temples (the Deified Caesar) and triumphal arches.

Abandoned after the fall of the empire, the Roman Forum can be found buried by a thick layer of soil before being unfortunately used as a stone quarry for construction of the city.

On entering the forum from the Capitol, you can experience include:

The Arch of Septimius Severus: well preserved, this imposing triumphal arch 23m wide and 21 high was built by the sitting posture and the people of Rome in honor of the 10 year reign of Emperor Septimius Severus and his two son, Caracalla and Geta. On the death of the emperor, Caracalla was assassinated his brother and erased the names of all the monuments!

The Arch of Septimius Severus is decorated with bas reliefs evoking the wars waged by the emperor against the Parthians. The best preserved bas reliefs are those winged Victories with trophies, prisoners Parthians with Roman and some battle scenes soldiers.

After the triumphal arch on the left, the brick building housed the Curia (Senate). Rebuilt after a fire in the third century it was later housed a church before being restored in the twentieth century. Originally the Curia was covered with marble and stucco. The bronze doors are copies, the original having been used at St. John Lateran. Inside exposed bas reliefs, from the Rostra (platforms for rants). The generosity of the Emperor Trajan is honored, the first bas relief commemorates the creation of a favorable loan and the second erase tax liabilities, and burned records to the emperor.
