A trip to Montreal

The elusive Montreal ... The Americans found him a European side, the European American-like in some ways ... you'll understand Montreal city of Canada, can not be defined easily. Finally, if everyone agrees on its charm, nonchalant atmosphere and cosmopolitanism.

The second French-speaking metropolis after Paris has a mosaic of neighborhoods architecture and varied influences, remarkable museums, some nice green space, enhanced by an intense cultural life and nightlife.

Old Montreal has been a successful restoration. Place d'Armes, Place Jacques-Cartier, the Notre-Dame Basilica, the Château Ramezay are so many historical monuments, tracing the history of the small French colony Ville-Marie, Montreal's ancestor. The center reflects meanwhile economic prosperity today. Chinatown, the Latin Quarter, the underground city, the Village ?? visitors discover that Montreal is primarily a city of neighborhoods, each of which differs from others.

Tucked between Mount Royal, here we just call him "the mountain," and the St. Lawrence River, Montreal is far from being a prisoner of its city planning. Moreover, to preserve it from commercial speculation, Mount Royal was bought by the city in 1875 for the modest sum of one million dollars (!). Today Montrealers enjoy walking the trails of Mont-Royal and practice different activities: cycling, jogging, ice skating and even skiing in winter!

Another aspect and not least, the city's cultural life. It has become one of the most "in view" of the planet. Concert halls and theaters offer both classic and avant-garde creations. Additionally, the city annually hosts a string of international festivals: Jazz Festival, Festival International Film Festival, Just for Laughs, Francofolies ?? ...

Finally, visitors can enjoy the nightlife of bars and nightclubs. The Latin Quarter and the Village, the gay neighborhood, are ideal for outings.

     History of Montreal

Montreal was founded in 1642 by a group of willing and nuns led by Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve. These established a colony called Ville-Marie to evangelize the Indians of New France. It is known that Jacques Cartier led the way and went into the region in 1535, however it is truly with Paul de Chomedey the city was established. Ville-Marie developed through the fur trade.

In 1760, the British captured the city and a wave of immigrants from England, Scotland and Ireland landed in Montreal. The Treaty of Paris of 1763 grants of New France to Britain. The mid-nineteenth century, Montreal has 58 000 inhabitants, mostly English.

The city has a strong economic development, particularly through the construction of railway networks and the Lachine Canal, allowing boats to cross the rapids south of the island. An Anglophone bourgeoisie benefits from this growth and take the reins of the economy.

In the 1880s, new waves of immigrants Italians, Russians and Jews flesh out the population of the city. The early twentieth century was marked by inflation and unemployment. The 1950s saw the development of the banking sector and Montreal became the financial center of Canada.

In 1970, the city has more than two million inhabitants. Various major projects are undertaken: the subway, the creation of the underground city, a world first.

Montreal hosts major events sweeping the Montreal landscape: the Universal Exhibition of 1967 and the 1976 Olympic Games in the second half of the twentieth century, Montreal was robbed of the title city in Canada by Toronto. In 1992, Montreal celebrated its 350th anniversary.
